New Growth

Welcome back to the farm everybody!

Today we are going to talk about new growth on the farm. Some of the growth you might expect and some you might not. Hang out and find out what all is growing on the farm.

We are just shy of three weeks past planting our garden. It doesn’t seem like that much time has passed nor does it seem like there should be much growth, but there is. There are also some failures to grow that we have address and will continue to address as the growing season passes.

Let’s talk about the wins first, that way we feel good and are in a good mood to learn from the failures that happened. The biggest win was the cantaloupe. Every single one sprouted and is growing well. The peppers we sprouted are doing great as well. The store-bought starts are having a little trouble though.

The ninja chickens that were able to get in the garden before we fenced it in did some damage for sure. Half of the watermelons started which was nice but the chickens managed to get the other seeds we think. One zucchini and one yellow squash plant came up of the three each we planted, which we are thinking are also ninja chicken victims.

The sunflowers and okra along the outer edge of the garden are popping up. Some of the sunflowers actually made it through the ninja chicken invasion which we are happy about. The empty spots were replanted to hopefully fill the gaps and give us more beautiful sunflowers.

The many green beans and cucumbers we planted had one sprout each. This we think is probably due to old seeds that were improperly stored. New seeds are planned to be purchased because we definitely eat enough green beans to make it worthwhile, and I am interested in making our own pickles.

The second growth we have been having on the farm is a growth in fits and starts but its there. Delisa is growing in health and energy and ability to enjoy life again. In her new found health, we are able to go and do social things again. We recently attended a crawfish boil with a live band and had a blast hanging out with friends.

She has also felt well enough to take on a pet sitting job here at the farm. We are sitting a crazy hyper Doodle pupper that is about a year old while her family is on a great adventure for a month this summer! Moxie Jade is a handful of energy and excitement who loves to play ball and evidently chase chickens. The chickens learned quickly to stay out of the back yard if they didn’t want to get chased. She has made fast friends with Daisy but Jazzy hasn’t warmed up to her at all.

Another aspect of this growth in health that is exciting is that we are going to be having a second visitor to our farm for a while. Delisa is going to be fostering a rescue horse and training it so that is has a better chance to be adopted. We are planning to do updated on progress each week so stick around. First, we have to get a paddock ready to allow safe integration to the farm and all the other animals to meet and accept this new addition without causing trouble as well as quarantine in case of pathogens.

Join us on our next blog for another garden update and to see how we are preparing for the arrival of the rescue horse. If you have any questions for us or comments, reach out in the comments below or on our social media accounts. Today, June 16th, is Delisa’s birthday as well so wish her a happy birthday where ever you follow us. We look forward to hearing from you and have a Sunflowery day!
